Jacky Owens has the patience, insight, sensitivity, depth and intelligence which combine to make anyone she is looking after feel extremely well cared for. This combination of qualities, underpinned by her innate kindness and a good sense of humour, makes learning hypnotherapy with her a pleasure and a real enhancement to feeling better at times of profound stress and fear.

Within minutes of my first session with Jacky, I felt a deep trust, so that whether it transpired that hypnotherapy was for me or not, her motives were genuine and her humanity evident. As it turned out I found hypnotherapy very useful - more than useful - I found it allowed me to access connections between mind and body which have, I firmly believe, helped me in the aftermath of having breast cancer. What I learned from Jacky stayed with me and after she left London, I continue to practice what she taught me.

One of the aspects of hypnotherapy which I have taken away with me from Jacky's sessions, is that unlike psychotherapy, it isn't necessary to go down every dark psychological alley to find what you need to know about yourself to maximise the effects of the therapy. Through Jacky's guidance you find where the alleys and cracks are and learn to look at them as though in a new light. It's not a harsh light, it's more a helpful glow, illuminating the moment when the damage began. I have had psychotherapy and while it has its place, it strikes me that under the more focused practical guidance hypnotherapy and a good practitioner like Jacky offer, you find similar help without the added stress and drama inherent in psychotherapy. I found the sessions felt very safe. I never dreaded them as I did psychotherapy. Quite the opposite, I looked forward to them and came away from them feeling better every time.  To deal with cancer, I had to learn a lot about myself and the illness, and Jacky helped me do that in a context which felt entirely unthreatening. What I learned in my sessions with Jacky over the period of about a year began a process which continues to help me be calm. Part of my cancer profile was, I believe, that I was stressed and neurotic. I had to learn how to deal with and process stress. I found the practical aspect of hypnotherapy reassuring. I have looked at some of the research data on hypnotherapy and am reassured that it has a scientific basis. Jacky knows her stuff very well and explains and communicates the theory behind her practice without jargon.

Jacky makes it clear that what she is giving her clients is for them to take away eventually and use by themselves. She discourages any dependency on her. This further inspires trust and is part of the process of being able to deal with trauma. You have to be able to leave and move on, dependence wouldn't be any use in the long term. This doesn't mean I don't miss Jacky, I do - very much. I often wish she was in London and I could go and have a session with her.
